On July 4, ZF LIFETEC, a new brand of ZF Group’s passive safety division, announced the launch of dual-stage side airbags, which use the milliseconds before the inevitable collision to establish valuable distance and better protect occupants.
The Pre-Crash Dual Stage Side Airbag (Dual Stage SAB) triggers its first stage approximately 200 milliseconds before the impact and pushes the occupant into the vehicle a few centimeters away from the expected impact point.
Due to the increased space, actual side airbags with a second stage can play their full protective role during a collision.
, Photo source: ZF, according to data from the European Association for New Car Safety Evaluation (Euro NCAP), side collisions account for about a quarter of all accidents in Europe.
The association also pointed out that side impacts are the second most common cause of death and serious injury.
The reason is that the collapse zone available in a side impact is small, which can lead to deep intrusion (penetrating deformation of the crew compartment).
As a result, serious head and chest injuries are common.
In addition, a side collision is not necessarily related to an accident between two vehicles.
for example, in a pillar collision scenario, a car skidded and collided with a tree, pillar or lamp post, which may also cause serious injury to the occupants of the car.
