On December 19, Wang Hua, general manager of Xiaomi’s public relations department, posted a Weibo saying: “Director Song (Song Gang), who everyone is rumored to be, is indeed very good, but Director Ji (Ji Guowei) of our Xiaomi Automobile Factory is also very excellent.
Enough!”, Source: Weibo screenshot.
It is reported that Wang Hua’s above remarks are in response to a recent market rumor.
The rumor said that Song Gang, vice president of production and manufacturing at Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory, will join Xiaomi Motors.
It is understood that as early as 2018, when Tesla announced its settlement in Shanghai as the first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project in China, Song Gang joined Tesla.
He previously worked for Ford and SAIC General Motors.
After joining Tesla, Song Gang led Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory to achieve localized production of Model 3 within one year.
in 2020, he began to lead the commissioning of Tesla’s Shanghai Phase II plant.
at the beginning of this year, Song Gang said he hoped to make Tesla’s Shanghai Energy Storage Factory a world benchmark.
On December 18, media reported that Song Gang, vice president of Tesla manufacturing and director of the Shanghai plant, had submitted his resignation several months ago, and December 18 was his last working date.
As of now, Tesla has not officially appointed a new Shanghai factory director.
Tesla China did not respond to the media regarding Song Gang’s resignation.
Photo source: Xiaomi Automobile, it is widely rumored in the industry that Song Gang joined Xiaomi Automobile partly because Xiaomi Automobile is facing a production capacity increase.
On December 16, Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing revealed at the annual ESG event held by CCTV and other institutions that Xiaomi Automobile is making every effort to accelerate production capacity expansion to keep up with market demand.
He mentioned that as a “recruit” in the automobile industry, Xiaomi Automobile completed the delivery of more than 100,000 vehicles in just 230 days.
However, Xiaomi owners who now place orders have to wait patiently for 4 to 5 months before picking up the car.
In order to shorten everyone’s waiting time, Xiaomi Group is constantly improving production efficiency and striving to allow more users to drive new cars as soon as possible.
In fact, Xiaomi’s expansion of production capacity is not only for the Xiaomi SU7, but Xiaomi’s second model, the YU7, will also be launched for delivery next year.
By then, production and delivery pressure will be even greater.
It is understood that Xiaomi YU7 is expected to be officially launched from June to July 2025, with a half-year warm-up period in between.
