A spokesman for Webaster also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Detroit factory is Webaster’s first unionized factory in the United States, and its workers will be affiliated with the UAW Local 3000 chapter.

, Last year, UAW membership fell to its lowest point since 2009, and against this background, the UAW has begun efforts to expand its membership.

In April, workers at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant voted to join the UAW, Volkswagen’s first union-represented plant in the United States since 1988.

But last week, a majority of workers at a Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama voted against joining a union, a setback for the UAW.
