Volvo Cars is rumored to launch the world’s first electric vehicle battery passport

According to Reuters, Volvo Cars will launch the world’s first electric vehicle battery passport to record information such as raw material sources, parts, recycled material content and carbon footprint of its flagship EX90 model.

According to reports, the passport was developed by Volvo in cooperation with British startup Circulor and took a total of five years.

It is reported that Circulor uses blockchain technology to map supply chains for enterprises.

Vanessa Butani, Volvo’s head of global sustainability, told Reuters that Volvo launched the battery passport nearly three years before the EU regulations came into effect in the hope of being transparent to consumers.

Butani said,”It’s very important for us to be pioneers and leaders.

” Production of the EX90 model equipped with battery passports will soon begin at Volvo’s Charleston, South Carolina plant and will be delivered to consumers in Europe and North America starting in the second half of this year.

At that time, EX90 owners will be able to obtain a simplified passport through the QR code on the inside of the driver’s seat door, and a more complete passport version will be submitted to regulators.

Butani said that battery passports will be gradually extended to all Volvo electric vehicles.

Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, CEO of Circulor, pointed out that the battery passport will also include updated information on the health status of electric vehicle batteries and will be valid for 15 years at a cost of approximately $10 per vehicle.

Circulor’s system tracks the trajectory of battery materials, records all material information with the help of suppliers ‘production systems, and checks suppliers’ monthly energy bills and how much of their energy comes from renewable energy to calculate the total carbon footprint.

, If Volvo brings in a supplier, Circulor needs to review it to ensure that information is up to date.

The battery passport also requires Volvo to change the way it tracks parts during the manufacturing process to understand the origin of every part in each vehicle.

, According to Johnson-Poensgen, European carmakers are busy creating battery passports, but even if they start now, some companies may have difficulty meeting the deadline.

Johnson-Poensgen also pointed out that although the United States has not yet established battery passport regulations, U.S. automakers have shown interest because they may need to prove they comply with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to qualify for electric vehicle subsidies.
