In April 1983, the first Santana owned by Volkswagen of Germany was launched in Shanghai.
This year, in the 40th year of Volkswagen’s entry into China, this company has gradually outlined the appearance of German cars for our countrymen.
The first Santana 40 years ago went like this: it was square and gave us an initial impression of German quality.
Volkswagen’s more classic product, the Beetle, goes like this: cocoa Love, which also makes us realize the diversity of design in the automotive world and the use of streamline.
Today, Volkswagen still has many classic and practical products.
Golf and Maiteng are all familiar Volkswagen.
Its steady and pragmatic car design style shows the distinctive style of Volkswagen.
On April 24th, 2024, on the eve of the Beijing Auto Show, Volkswagen launched a concept car called ID.
CODE, which aims to showcase the company’s future Volkswagen SUV design style and car function concept.
First of all, why is it called ID.
CODE? Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen passenger car brand in China, tells us that it is called CODE because it can extend many meanings: it not only means criteria, but also means to break the rules, but also symbolizes the vision of decoding and reshaping the product concept, and shows the vision of Volkswagen passenger car innovation forward.
Since the launch of this concept car, Volkswagen intends to combine the new Chinese DNA and take the lead in applying innovative technology to ID.CODE. Therefore, this concept car product is the result of cooperation between the team of Andreas Mindt, the chief designer of Dayuzhong passenger car, and the Chinese team.
It is understood that Andreas Mindt draws inspiration from the exchanges between the global and local teams in China, and cooperates with the Chinese design team to learn from each other and cooperate with each other in the process of materializing the concept car.
In the exchange with Andreas Mindt, I learned that the new ID.
CODE emphasizes three points in design-vitality, excellence and inspiration.
Especially for the Chinese market, applications such as intelligence and cockpit, including Chinese consumers’ desire for digital applications, give them a lot of inspiration.
First, let’s take a look at this concept car.
This is not a very “Volkswagen style” concept car product, which is why we point out “Volkswagen has changed” in the article.
On the whole, the ID.
CODE looks like a medium and large Gran Turismo coupe SUV, which combines a large number of lines and strength design on the body.
at the same time, the 5-meter-long body also creates an exaggerated posture. ID.CODE ‘s body design, on the one hand, in order to show its streamlined body structure, but also effectively improve the aerodynamic performance.
Visually, the continuous lines create a very round visual effect, which is also in line with the current trend of car following functional design.
What is worth noting is the design of the front light belt.
Known as the “light cloud”, the through lamp group uses a multi-color luminous design, supplemented by Volkswagen luminous car logo, the lamp group is composed of many luminous units, these luminous units can show different picture effects.
At the same time, the change in color can also indicate today’s weather and show the current driving condition (whether you are on autopilot, etc.). ID.CODE also demonstrated the concept of a new public cockpit space.
At the same time, in the cockpit space, Volkswagen emphasizes the atmosphere of the spatial layout-for example, after turning on the vehicle’s L4 intelligent driving system, it can turn on the “bonfire” mode of the cockpit.
The front seats can also rotate, and Volkswagen is committed to turning the car into a warm living space.
Instead of emphasizing refrigerators, color TVs and large sofas, Andreas Mindt responded that the reason for maintaining a simple and elegant style is to give users the right to choose.
He believes that although the screen is still a very important part of the cockpit design.
But the question of how many screens users need to use may never be solved, but designers have to keep trying-globally, the screen tends to display horizontal content.
but the ultra-wide curved screen is also convenient to display vertical content like Douyin.
In other words, you can watch either an 16:9 movie or a short video in the cockpit.
What we need to do now is to find a balance, taking into account the common mainstream applications and screen design forms.
” Meng Xia pointed out that in terms of cockpit design, market research and peer comments are often polarized, and people have different opinions on how many screens there should be in the car.
But Volkswagen wants to emphasize that the importance of design following features is to understand the purpose of these screen settings.
As for the different preferences of Central Europe, they can be solved in a more localized way.
The world of design is also a reincarnation, and history is always repeated.
Meng Xia mentioned that he had seen car refrigerators in European cars 20 years ago, and now they are back in fashion.
But “the advantage of electric cars is that they can achieve many things that traditional diesel locomotives cannot achieve, and are more flexible in terms of functions.” ID. CODE’s design philosophy is likely to be applied to the future products of various joint ventures, but Volkswagen did not mention specific plans.
But Meng Xia said Volkswagen will launch 35 models by 2030, 16 of which will be electric.
The emergence of ID.
CODE means that Volkswagen continues to consolidate its vision of “in China, for China”.
At the same time, Volkswagen focuses on the future, based on the connection with consumers, integrates the global perspective with local needs and resources, and uses technological innovation to meet the changing market demand.
