According to foreign media reports, the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) said on April 12 that the union was “extremely disappointed” with the decision of truck manufacturer Volvo Group to build a new truck plant in Mexico.
Volvo said the construction of a plant in Mexico would complement its production in the United States.
On April 11, UAW said in a letter that the union was investigating the contractual obligations of the Volvo Group’s LVO plant truck construction rate and the possible legal consequences of the group’s decision to build a plant in Mexico.
Volvo Group announced on April 11 that it would build the new plant in Mexico and said it would invest another $80 million in future production at the LVO plant, while Volvo has invested $73 million over the past five years.
“the plant will provide additional capacity support for Volvo truck and Mack truck’s growth plans in the United States and Canada, as well as Mack sales in Mexico and Latin America,” the Volvo Group said in a statement.
Volvo expects the new plant to start operating in 2026.
Tim Hertzog, president of UAW 677, said: “this is a slap in the face for all of us.
” On April 12th, Volvo had no immediate comment.
