The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announces postponement of tariff increases on Chinese electric vehicles

[TechWeb] It was reported on August 1 that the U.S. policy of imposing a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles has brought challenges to both Chinese car companies and U.S. domestic car manufacturers.

Chinese car companies such as Krypton and BYD are facing obstacles to entering the U.S. market, while American car companies such as GM’s Buick Electra E5 and E4 models that have been launched in the Chinese market have also delayed their entry into the U.S. market due to tariff issues.

However, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced on July 30 that it would postpone the measure for at least two weeks, two days before the new tariffs were scheduled to be implemented on August 1.

The decision was made to give the United States more time to coordinate opinions.

Foreign media mentioned this extension in a report on July 31.

, This tariff policy not only targets electric vehicles, but also includes electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, cranes, steel, aluminum and other fields.

In addition, the United States also imposes a 50% tariff on semiconductor chips exported from China.

Medical supplies, such as syringes and gloves, have also been affected by the tariff increase.

, The Biden administration’s decision to impose tariffs has been criticized.

Polar Star CEO Thomas Ingratt publicly expressed concerns about the rule in April.

The Polar Star 2 model is about to face a 100% tariff.

It is unclear whether the brand plans to move production to a new factory or choose to abandon the U.S. market.
