Tesla’s autonomous driving advertising charged with fraud: Autopilot is not autonomous driving

Fast Technology reported on June 11 that a California judge today rejected Tesla’s attempt to withdraw false advertising charges against its autonomous driving technology, and the case will enter the formal trial stage.

, The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) began investigating Tesla for allegedly publishing misleading autonomous driving advertisements in 2021.

, The investigation found that Tesla’s public claims were inconsistent with the materials it submitted to the DMV.

In 2022, the DMV formally questioned Tesla and asked it to respond to allegations of exaggerating its system capabilities.

, Tesla argued that they had long been allowed to promote autonomous driving features and should therefore be able to continue to do so.

however, the court apparently disagreed with this statement and ruled that the case would go to court.

, In addition, this is the second case Tesla has filed a lawsuit in a self-driving advertising fraud case this month.

Previously, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was also investigating whether Tesla’s autonomous driving advertisements contained securities fraud.

The focus of controversy is Tesla’s long-standing reference to driving assistance software by the names “Autopilot” and “FullSelf-Driving.

” Although these two systems are related, their functions and prices are different.

, The plaintiff believes that the name “Autopilot” is easily misunderstood and believes that drivers do not need to pay attention to road conditions when using it.

However, Tesla has always insisted that “Autopilot” refers to a pilot assistance system similar to an aircraft, and pilots still need to be vigilant at all times.

However, Tesla’s statement has not been accepted by the US official.

In the autonomous driving classification of the International Society of Automatic Machine Engineers (SAE), Tesla Autopilot and FSD are both L2 level assisted driving and have not yet reached the classification standard of autonomous driving.
