South Korean researchers develop next-generation cooling materials that can improve summer cooling efficiency without electricity

According to foreign media reports, Dr.

Jin Gu, Kang and his team from the Nanophotonics Research Center of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have developed a colored radiation-cooled liquid crystal material that can be cooled without an external power supply and emits color at the same time.

The research results were published in the journal Chemical Engineering Journal.

, Radiative cooling is an unpowered cooling technology that releases infrared radiation as heat through an atmospheric window to reduce temperatures.

As the next generation of environmentally friendly cooling technology, this method can make up for the power consumption of air conditioners.

, Radiative cooling materials used during the day are dyed white to reduce the absorption of sunlight.

This provides excellent cooling performance, but has the disadvantage that it cannot be used for buildings or vehicles that require aesthetics because multiple colors are difficult to achieve.

Therefore, the development of colored radiant cooling materials that simultaneously satisfy cooling and aesthetics has recently attracted people’s attention.
