May 10 (Reuters)-US President Joe Biden will announce new Chinese tariffs on strategic industries, including electric vehicles, next week, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The full announcement could be released as early as Tuesday and is expected to maintain existing taxes to a large extent.
The announcement may also be postponed.
Specific industries also include semiconductors and solar equipment.
In addition, it was stated that the details of the specific amount or category of tariffs to be imposed were not clear, but the Government was said to have focused on areas of interest in the area of strategic competition and national security.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative made a proposal to the White House a few weeks ago, but the final announcement was postponed because of the ongoing internal debate on the plan.
With the November US election approaching and China’s electric cars, photovoltaic and other products selling well all over the world, the Biden administration began to think of raising tariffs in order to grab political benefits, and has acted frequently since the end of last year.
In February, Biden issued a statement announcing that it would take “unprecedented action” to prevent China’s Networked cars and trucks, including electric vehicles, from entering the US market.
Auto industry officials later revealed that the Biden administration was considering raising tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
In April, the Biden government announced that it would triple tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum.
At the same time, US officials keep hyping the so-called topic of “overcapacity” in China.
