Researchers collaborate to develop efficient inverters that can improve the performance of automotive electric drives

The inverter withstands high thermal load and overheating, which may seriously affect the performance of electric vehicle transmission system.

According to foreign media reports, in the Dauerpower project, the Fraunhofer Reliability and Micro-Integration Institute (Fraunhofer IZM) is working with project partners Porsche AG and Bosch to develop an electric inverter with improved cooling function, aimed at optimizing continuous load capacity and cost.

(photo source: Fraunhofer IZM), this compact three-phase drive inverter has a high continuous output of 720kW or 979hp and is rated at 900A.

Fraunhofer IZM said that by optimizing cooling management, the inverter can operate at lower operating temperatures, thereby reducing power consumption.

In addition to longer full-load utilization, this can also reduce the required semiconductor area, further reducing the cost of the transition to electric vehicles.

Eugen Erhardt, head of the R & D project, said: “compared with existing silicon-based inverters, this method achieves a performance improvement of 20% Mel 30%.

” Through the thermal optimization of advanced materials and the improvement of the embedding process in the production process, the researchers increased the power density.
