NHTSA: Failure of substandard airbag inflator kills three people

According to foreign media reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on July 10 that in the past nine months, three people have died and two have been seriously injured due to the failure of a replacement cheap airbag inflator.

, NHTSA urges second-hand car buyers and owners to beware of substandard imported inflators that could cause death or serious injury to people inside the vehicle during a collision.

The regulator said the inflators could malfunction in a crash and inject large amounts of metal fragments into the driver.

NHTSA said: “These suspicious replacement parts are usually made by foreign companies with little reputation or experience in high-quality manufacturing, sell for far less than the cost of high-quality authentic equipment, they are ordered online and are not installed by reputable repair shops or manufacturer dealers.

If a used car has been in a previous collision, they should go to an independent repairman for an airbag inspection to ensure that the parts are high-quality authentic.

, In recent years, NHTSA has been investigating the possible degradation of airbag inflators after long-term exposure to high humidity.

Takata airbag inflators could explode, releasing metal fragments in cars and trucks.

Since 2009, the problem has killed more than 30 people around the world, including 26 Americans, and injured hundreds more.

, In the past ten years, more than 20 automakers have recalled more than 67 million Takata airbag inflators in the United States and more than 100 million inflators worldwide.

This is the largest automotive safety recall in world history.
