According to foreign media reports, a legal document shows that IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has sued the country’s automaker Mahinda, accusing it of using the “6E” trademark in the latest electric vehicle, infringing IndiGo’s trademark rights.
In a filing with the stock exchange, Mahenda denied any wrongdoing, saying that its recently launched electric vehicles “BE6e” and “XEV9e” have obtained the necessary Trademark Registering and do not conflict with the “6E” brand used by IndiGo.

For many years, the company has been using “6E” as its call sign and applies it to all brand-related businesses, including co-branded credit cards, points reward programs and in-flight magazines, etc.
IndiGo said in a 48-page lawsuit that Mahenda “deliberately attempted” to associate himself with the aviation industry and claimed that its electric car was designed to resemble an aircraft cockpit.
Although trademark infringement cases are common in India, such legal disputes between large listed companies are rare.
For the past 18 years, IndiGo’s “6E” trademark has been exclusively associated with its services.
IndiGo said that because Mahenda used the “BE6e” trademark, the company now faces the risk of losing the uniqueness of its trademark.
Ma Hengda said in a filing with the stock exchange that it was “discussing with IndiGo to find an amicable solution.
” The company did not comment further on the content of the lawsuit.
, IndiGo has applied to the Delhi High Court for a permanent injunction against Mahinda.
Mahenda’s latest product line focuses on India’s fast-growing compact SUV market and is designed to compete with Tata’s Curvv and Hyundai Motor’s Creta.
According to data, in the first six months of this fiscal year, India’s compact SUV market segment grew by nearly 20%.
India’s electric vehicle market is small, accounting for only 2% of total car sales of 4 million vehicles last year.
However, the government hopes to increase the market share of electric vehicles to 30% by 2030.
