How far is the “progress bar” for mass production of solid-state batteries?

“the mass production of solid-state batteries faces challenges in the short term, and it is expected to be more difficult to achieve mass production in the next three years, while it is more realistic to achieve it in five years.

” Lian Yubo, chief scientist of BYD, chief engineer of the automobile and president of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, expressed the above views at the 2024 World New Energy vehicle Congress.

As a new focus of competition in the global automotive industry, major enterprises have laid out to seize the opportunity of the solid-state battery market.

For when the solid-state battery will be mass produced on the car, both inside and outside the industry are paying close attention to the “progress bar”.

According to TrendForce Jibang Consulting, around 2028 will become a key time point for mass production of solid-state batteries.

Recently, various car companies have also heard the latest developments about the mass production of solid-state batteries from time to time.

It is worth noting that Zeng Yuqun, chairman and CEO of Ningde Times, also expressed similar views on the schedule of solid-state batteries this year.

He believes that if the numbers 1 to 9 represent the technology and manufacturing maturity of solid-state batteries, where 1 represents the beginning of the field and 9 indicates that the technology is mature and can be produced on a large scale, then the highest level of the current industry is only about 4.

Previously, Sun Huajun, CTO of BYD Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., said that BYD sulphide all-solid-state batteries will be produced in small quantities in the field of medium-and high-end electric vehicles from 2027.

after about three years of demonstration application, they will gradually expand to the mainstream electric vehicle market between 2030 and 2032.

by 2032, the annual sales of electric vehicles with all-solid-state batteries are expected to reach 120000, when the corresponding market size will approach 25 billion yuan.

As the leader and second in the power battery industry, the speeches of Ningde Times and BYD provide a clearer perspective on the development of solid-state batteries.

In addition, at present, most of the so-called solid-state batteries in the market are semi-solid-state batteries, the technological breakthrough of all-solid-state batteries is still mainly in the laboratory stage, and there is still a long way to go from the practical application.

Both inside and outside the industry are hoping that solid-state batteries will bring revolutionary changes to the industry.

However, according to Lian Yubo’s point of view, even if the solid-state battery accelerates, lithium iron phosphate batteries will not be eliminated, and it is firmly believed that lithium iron phosphate batteries will not withdraw from the market in the next 20 years.

To investigate the reason, he pointed out that at present, the technical parameters of lithium iron phosphate battery have made remarkable progress, and its loading accounts for more than half.

However, these two types of battery technology will each play a role in the market according to the different levels and needs of the vehicle.

In the future, solid-state batteries may be mainly used in some high-end new energy vehicles, while lithium iron phosphate batteries will still occupy a dominant position in a large number of popular new energy vehicles.

It is worth noting that, according to public reports, Toyota’s solid-state batteries were the first mass-produced cars or hybrid models, rather than pure electric models.

The reason is that the battery capacity of hybrid models is small, and the cost of solid-state batteries has little impact on the vehicle price, while the solid-state battery packs of pure electric models will greatly increase the production cost and may affect their marketability.

Auto companies update the mass production schedule, from a global point of view, the industrialization process of solid-state battery also continues to press the “acceleration key”.

Recently, in addition to Dongfeng Motor, SAIC, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota have announced the mass production schedule of solid-state batteries.

On September 23rd, you Zheng, deputy general manager of Dongfeng Automobile Group, announced at the autumn brand launch that he would mass produce solid-state battery products with energy density up to 350Wh/kg, and said that he would accelerate the development of the next generation of all-solid-state battery, with the goal of breaking the energy density of 550Wh/kg.

It is understood that since 2018, Dongfeng Motor has actively laid out advanced technologies such as all-solid-state lithium batteries and fuel cells, and set up a professional team to carry out systematic research from materials to systems.

At present, Dongfeng has mastered the key technologies such as electrolyte, diaphragm and in-situ curing, and launched solid-state battery products of 240Wh/kg and 350Wh/kg.

Yu Jingmin, SAIC passenger car general manager, revealed at the 2024 Chengdu Auto Show that the solid-state battery developed by SAIC will be the first to be used in the MG brand, and the first MG model with solid-state battery is expected to be launched in the second quarter of next year.

In July this year, SAIC announced at its first interim shareholders’ meeting in 2024 that its all-solid-state battery project had entered the 500-day countdown to production and was expected to achieve mass production and delivery of Zhiji’s new car by 2027.

Mercedes-Benz and American battery startup Factorial Energy announced on Sept.

11 that they have jointly developed a new solid-state battery called Solstice, which has made a significant breakthrough in technology and will be put on the market in 2030.

Factorial said the Solstice solid-state battery has an energy density as high as 450Wh/kg, which will increase the mileage of electric vehicles by 80 per cent, while “significantly reducing” vehicle weight and improving vehicle efficiency.

The layout of all-solid-state batteries in Japan was relatively early.

Toyota announced not long ago that its development and production plan for the next generation of high-performance batteries and all-solid-state batteries has been certified by the Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and formally incorporated into the Japanese government’s Battery supply Assurance Program.

According to Toyota’s plan, solid-state battery production will start in 2026, with limited initial production, a gradual increase in production by 2027 and 2028, and a long-term goal of mass production in 2030 and later.

at that time, the full promotion of solid-state batteries is expected to become a reality.
