Honda’s all-solid-state battery demonstration production line was unveiled for the first time and will be launched in January 2025

On November 21, Honda publicly announced for the first time its own demonstration production line for all-solid-state batteries for mass production.

The production line is located at the Honda Technology Research Institute in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

It will be mainly used for technical verification of the all-solid-state battery mass production process, and will also determine the basic specifications of the battery cells.

Its building area is approximately 27,400 square meters, from the weighing/mixing of electrode materials, to coating and rolling, to battery assembly, formation and module assembly, all verification equipment for each process is fully available.

The relevant factory has been completed in the spring of 2024, and the main equipment required for verification has been basically moved in and completed.

The demonstration production line will be launched in January 2025.

While promoting the development of battery specifications, it will also verify the mass production technology and mass production costs of each process.

Efforts are also being made to reduce electricity and other indirect costs, including building production management technologies to minimize low-dew point environments and ensure operational safety and battery performance.

, Keiji Otsu, representative president of the Honda Institute of Technology Co., Ltd., said: “As an innovative technology, all-solid-state batteries will become a game changer in the pure electric era.

As a key factor in electrification, batteries are replacing the engines that have supported the development of automobiles to this day.

The readiness of the all-solid-state battery demonstration production line is an important milestone for Honda.

Honda will continue to challenge and launch mobile travel tools equipped with all-solid-state batteries as soon as possible to provide new value to customers.

“, In the field of all-solid-state batteries, Honda aims to start mass production in the mid-to-late 2020s, and is rapidly advancing research and development from both material specifications and manufacturing methods.

Among them, the production technology department has been involved in development long before the battery materials and specifications were determined.

By determining the structure, materials and manufacturing methods suitable for vehicle loading, it has not only quickly established a demonstration production line, but is also efficiently promoting material selection work.

Honda’s goal is to strive to achieve carbon neutrality in all fields of products and corporate activities by 2050.

and to achieve 100% of global sales of pure electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles by 2040.
