According to foreign media reports, Ford Motor Company has applied for a patent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a steering wheel that can be converted to a non-driving position, which may be used in future Ford cars.
The patent was filed on February 15, 2024 and published on September 12, 2024.
The serial number is 0300567.
, As early as May 2022, Ford announced a patent on a retractable steering wheel and pedal system that aims to provide more space for drivers and even turn the vehicle into an office area in autonomous driving applications.
Subsequently, the redesigned Ford Transit Custom model introduced a steering wheel that could be folded flat and turned into a table, and was equipped with a tray.
In March last year, a new patent added some additional features to demonstrate the possible future use of the steering wheel in Ford models in the United States.
The newly published patents further promote the realization of this concept.
, In the future, Ford cars will be equipped with a steering wheel that can be rotated from a steering position to a non-steering position, and vice versa.
The car system will only allow the steering wheel to rotate to a non-steering position when the car is in a non-steering state and receives an activation signal to rotate to a non-steering position.
The system also includes a monitoring device configured and arranged to allow the steering wheel in the non-steering position to make ergonomically optimal adjustments to its position relative to the person in the vehicle based on determined parameters.
