Ferrari applies for patent for self-damping four-point seat belt or suitable for road applications

According to foreign media reports, Ferrari submitted a patent application for a self-damping four-point seat belt to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which is said to be legally applicable to roads.

(photo source: USPTO) four-point seat belts are good for vehicles on restricted tracks.

These tight seat belts fasten the occupant tightly to the seat, fully reducing the occupant’s physical movement in the seat and allowing the driver to focus on controlling the car through his senses without having to be distracted in order to maintain his sitting posture.

Although it has some advantages on the track, unlike the three-point seat belts used on legal cars on the road, when most multipoint seat belt designs are applied, if the car suddenly stops during a collision, the occupants’ bodies will be confined to the same place, and their heads will continue to move at the speed of the car, which may lead to cervical sprain.

To prevent injuries, racing drivers wear a head and neck support (HANS) device attached to the helmet.

For road users, this is usually impractical or illegal.
