But in a speech at his latest rally at Juneau Airport in Wisconsin, Trump doubled the import tax rate he wanted to impose.
Trump said: “If necessary, the United States will impose a 200% tariff on cars imported from Mexico.
We will not let those cars enter the United States.
” Trump promised to revitalize the U.S. auto industry when talking about the tariffs.
However, experts say Trump’s plan could lead to higher car prices.
In 2023, Mexico exported approximately 3 million vehicles to the United States, of which the “Detroit Big Three” accounted for approximately half.
The Tax Policy Center think tank said that the United States imposed high new tariffs on cars imported from Mexico may increase the cost of American cars, whether domestically produced or imported, used or new.
Trump also threatened to impose high tariffs on cars imported from Mexico during the 2016 campaign and put them into practice during his tenure as U.S. president (2019), when automakers said that imposing tariffs of up to 25% on cars imported from Mexico and parts could have a serious impact on the U.S. auto industry and drive up car costs.
