Recently, we learned from relevant channels that General Motors has suspended production of its Cruise Origin self-driving vehicles indefinitely, and the Cruise team will focus on the Chevrolet Bolt(parameters)| Inquiry) EV models to develop the next generation of autonomous vehicles.
GM CEO Mary Barra said that Cruise Origin’s design has created regulatory uncertainty and that unit costs will be significantly reduced after switching to the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
, , Cruise Origin is an autonomous vehicle without a driver’s seat, steering wheel or pedals, jointly developed by General Motors, Cruise and Honda.
Cruise Origin was first released in 2020 and plans to achieve L4/L5 autonomous driving capabilities.
Previously, according to industry analysts, due to the high cost of sensors and computing software, the price of autonomous vehicles may be as high as US$300,000 – 400,000, and companies will face huge challenges in recovering costs in the future.
Cruise pointed out that companies are trying to solve this problem.
It is understood that Cruise Origin has a designed driving range of 1 million miles (approximately 1.
61 million kilometers), all internal components can be replaced, and the modular design can reduce vehicle operating costs.
,,,, in October 2023, the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s driverless car license due to safety concerns.
The reason was an accident in San Francisco where a pedestrian was towed by a Cruise vehicle, exacerbating public concerns about the safety of self-driving cars.
Cruise subsequently suspended all driverless operations and announced a suspension of production in November.
Although Cruise has resumed self-driving taxi operations in Phoenix, Houston and Dallas, and is conducting tests in Dubai, the vehicles are all equipped with operators.
Cruise has not yet resumed operations in San Francisco and is still under investigation into the October accident.
