According to foreign media reports, the Spanish government and its chief negotiator EV Motors revealed that they are about to reach an agreement with Chinese automaker Chery to produce cars in Spain.
If the report is true, this will be Chery’s first production base in Europe.
Spain’s Ministry of Industry said in a statement that it is confident that it will reach a formal agreement with Chery to produce cars in Barcelona in the next few days.
A spokesman for Barcelona-based EV Motors revealed that this week, a Spanish delegation held active negotiations with Chery in China.
The focus of the negotiations is that Chery can produce cars at a plant that Nissan closed in 2021, which will help restore some of the 1600 direct jobs previously lost.
Nissan’s main factory in Barcelona has been partially handed over to Silence, a Spanish electric motorcycle maker, and local engineering groups QEV and EV Motors, which plans to turn it into an electric vehicle hub.
In March this year, EV Motors took full corporate control of the center.
EV Motors also played a key role in the negotiations between Spain and Chery.
EV Motors also plans to produce pick-up trucks and electric vans under the Ebro brand, which could involve potential production and commercial deals with Chery, but did not elaborate, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Chery did not immediately respond to a request for comment to the report.
Chery is one of several Chinese carmakers to introduce low-cost cars, mainly electric cars, to Europe.
Earlier this year, the company began selling cars in Spain.
Photo: Chery, it has been reported that the Italian government is also in talks with Chery to attract it to produce cars locally.
An Italian government official said there was no news that Chery had chosen Barcelona as its new production base.
An industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Chery was still in contact with the Italian authorities but had received little feedback and confirmed that negotiations with Spain were making progress.
In fact, electric car sales are still relatively low in both Spain and Italy, which is in line with Chery’s strategy of selling internal combustion engine, hybrid and all-electric vehicles at the same time.
