According to Reuters, on August 1, the Canadian trade union Unifor called on the Canadian federal government to impose tariffs on all Chinese-made electric vehicles, electric vehicle batteries and other parts, in line with some tariff measures already proposed by the United States.
After the United States and the European Union announced high tariffs on electric vehicles made in China, on July 2 this year, Canada launched a 30-day public consultation period to discuss imposing additional tariffs on electric vehicles made in China.
Currently, Canada is in the final stage of reviewing the state subsidies received by Chinese automakers.
The public consultation period is expected to end this week, when new tariff measures may be introduced.
The Canadian government pointed out: “If not controlled, China’s unfair support for its electric vehicle industry may lead to a sharp increase in Canadian imports, which will adversely affect Canada’s planned investment in electric vehicles and the transformation of the automotive industry.
” On August 1, Unifor, Canada’s largest union representing private sector workers, said that the United States and the European Union had responded positively to the threat posed by unfairly subsidized Chinese imports, and now it was Canada’s turn.
Unifor requires Canada to impose a surcharge on Chinese-made electric vehicles based on the existing 100% tariff rate, a 25% surcharge on batteries, and tariffs on imports of motors and battery materials.
Just as Canada is considering imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicle-related products, BYD recently met with the Canadian government to discuss possible tariff issues for electric vehicles and the company’s plans to sell passenger electric vehicles in Canada.
Photo source: BYD, a public document submitted to Canada at the end of July this year showed that lobbyists representing BYD have registered with the Canadian federal government and the Ontario provincial government to “provide advice on BYD’s entry into the Canadian electric passenger vehicle sales market and establishment of new businesses and related matters such as electric vehicle tariffs.
