Recently, Canadian union Unifor announced that its members have voted to approve a new labor contract with General Motors.
The agreement covers workers at the CAMI assembly plant and battery assembly plant in Ontario and aims to increase workers ‘wages and ensure their employment security.
, Unifor 88 branch members overwhelmingly approved the two-year contract.
Under the terms of the agreement, workers will receive an immediate 10% wage increase, and will receive another 2% and 3% increases in September 2025 and July 2026, respectively.
In addition, the new contract also stipulates that wages for skilled jobs will increase by 20.25%. This new agreement is expected to last until September 20, 2026.
, Unifor National Chairman Lana Payne said this is the first time Unifor has successfully negotiated a two-year contract with General Motors and allows members of the CAMI plant to align with the pace of negotiations with Detroit’s three major automakers-GM, Ford and Stellantis.
The move will help integrate the power of more than 5,600 GM Unifor members in future negotiations.
