Beijing Institute of Technology develops a new supersurface to achieve temperature adaptive radiant cooling

As the global energy crisis intensifies and climate change accelerates, finding sustainable energy management solutions has become increasingly urgent.

As a promising method, passive radiant cooling technology allows objects to be cooled by radiating heat directly into space without requiring additional energy.

At present, a variety of radiant cooling materials have been developed, but most of them have static emissivity.

This means that when the ambient temperature is low, these radiation-cooling materials still have strong cooling capabilities, resulting in “excessive cooling” and increasing the energy consumption of the heating system.

Thermochromic phase change materials, on the other hand, are ideal for dynamic radiant cooling without the use of power supplies, circuits or moving parts.
