On June 11, according to media reports, Volvo plans to transfer production of two SUV electric models, EX30 and EX90, from China to Belgium in response to the EU’s possible tariff increases on imported electric vehicles from China.
Currently, the EX30 is produced at the Geely factory in Zhangjiakou, while the EX90 is produced at the Volvo Daqing factory.
For the U.S. market, the EX90 is produced at a factory in Charleston, South Carolina and is not affected by tariff issues, but the future of the EX30 is unclear.
, Previously, the United States had increased tariffs on electric vehicles made in China from 27% to 100%, while the European Commission was also conducting a countervailing investigation on electric vehicles made in China.
However, the European auto industry holds different views on this tariff, with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen all warning against imposing additional tariffs.
Tesla founder Musk has said that neither he nor Tesla has asked for these tariffs and believes that any behavior that suppresses freedom of trade or distorts the market is not a good thing.
He pointed out that Tesla has performed well in the Chinese market without tariffs and preferential support, and supports not imposing tariffs.
Polestar CEO Thomas Engratt also expressed confusion about the decision to increase tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, and he hoped to at least achieve fair trade.
