According to The Detroit News, autonomous car company May Mobility is scaling back its headquarters expansion plans.

Photo source: May Mobility, Michigan Economic Development Corp (MEDC) said May Mobility, headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has reduced the number of new jobs to one-third of the number announced in April 2023.

May Mobility had committed to investing $18 million and creating 300 new jobs at its headquarters, but now the company plans to add only 100 jobs by the end of October 2026.

, In response, on September 24, the Michigan Strategic Fund’s board of directors voted to adjust its performance-based funding for May Mobility from $3 million to $1 million.

According to a MEDC briefing memorandum, the company sought changes from the agency, saying it would not be able to meet its original funding requirements.

The memo read,”The company has revised its business plans to lower expectations related to the growth of autonomous vehicle technology.

If this change request is approved, the company is confident that it will be able to meet the funding requirements.

“, On the same day, May Mobility Chief Personnel Officer Tom Tang emphasized in an email,”May Mobility is not laying off employees, but is re-sizing its workforce to better meet the changing needs of the business as we expand self-driving car services.

Although some positions were eliminated earlier this year, we are actively adding positions in key areas to support our growth.

In fact, we are recruiting now.

There are 19 positions currently under recruitment and new positions will continue to be opened to help us achieve our goals.

“, In February this year, May Mobility said it would lay off about 13% of its employees, which eventually affected about 40 employees.

According to Tang, the company has 173 employees in Michigan and a total of 278 employees across the company.
