Argonne National Laboratory develops ultra-stable layered oxide cathode to improve battery performance

At present, efforts to develop more advanced battery technology are mainly focused on designing new cathode materials.

This is because existing cathodes perform poorly at high voltages and may lead to rapid loss of battery capacity.

Layered oxide cathode is a cathode material with a layered crystal structure, which is particularly promising for the development of next-generation batteries.

Preliminary research results show that these materials can improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries while reducing their manufacturing costs and limiting their impact on the environment.

, According to foreign media reports, researchers at the Argonne National Laboratory recently designed a new ultra-stable NMC cathode, a layered oxide cathode composed of nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn) and cobalt (Co).

Related papers were published in the journal Nature Energy.

It is reported that the materials designed can achieve high performance in lithium-ion batteries without significantly reducing capacity.

Photo source: The journal Nature Energy,”In order to further advance NMC cathodes, our team has developed a series of concentration gradient NMC cathodes to make best use of the beneficial properties of nickel, manganese and cobalt,” said Dr.

Khalil Amine, the first author of the paper.

“In this concentration gradient cathode, nickel concentration decreases linearly, while manganese concentration increases linearly from the center of each particle to the outer layer.

“, This full-gradient cathode design, patented by Dr.

Amine in 2012, takes advantage of the high energy density of nickel (located in the cathode core) and the high thermal stability and long life of manganese on the cathode’s outer layer.

It is worth noting that this design has been licensed to various battery technology and material manufacturers.
