According to foreign media reports, researchers at Aarhus University have found a better way to recycle polyurethane foam from mattresses and other items.
(Photo source: pubs.rsc.org), Polyurethane (PUR) is an indispensable plastic material that can be used in mattresses, refrigerators and building insulation, shoes, cars, aircraft, wind turbine blades and cables.
However, this material can easily put a burden on the environment and climate.
Most of the world’s discarded PUR products end up either burned or dumped into landfills.
, Now, there is a small but growing industry that chemically decomposes (depolymerizes) PUR into its original main components, namely polyols and isocyanates, to be reused as raw materials for new PUR products.
But there is still a long way to go before these products truly compete with the “original” materials, and the cost of separating and purifying the elements required is high.
